Pink shirt day
Pink Shirt Day is an antibullying campaign that celebrates diversity and creates environments where all people can feel safe, valued and respected. Each year, workplaces, schools, organisations and individuals join the movement to make a stand against bullying.
Shark finning
Shark finning is when people cut the fins off of the shark and put it into soup and eat it, then they put the rest of the shark into the ocean to just let it die. The cartilage in the fins is usually shredded and used primarily to provide texture and thickening to shark fin soup, a traditional Chinese soup or broth dating back to the Song Dynasty (960-1279). The dish is considered a luxury item embodying notions of hospitality, status, and good fortune. Sharks are important in our ocean because they help with coral and everything in the ocean.
The fin-shark soup played an important role as an indicator of social standing. It has the consistency close to noodles but it has no flavor of nutritional value so people add chicken broth to make it taste like something. It was first created by an Emporer in the sun dynasty during the Chinese golden era. The dish was made to represent the wealth, power, and generosity of the Emporer.
the starfish poem
what was the main message?
that the guy is trying to make a change and make things better.
the evidence is that he is throwing starfish back into the ocean...
the poem:
Once upon a time
there was a wise man
who used to go to the ocean
to do his writing.
He had a habit of walking
on the beach
before he began his work.
One day he was walking along
the shore.
As he looked down the beach,
he saw a human
figure moving like a dancer.
He smiled to himself to think
of someone who would
dance to the day.
So he began to walk faster
to catch up.
As he got closer, he saw
that it was a young man
and the young man wasn't dancing,
but instead he was reaching
down to the shore,
picking up something
and very gently throwing it
into the ocean.
As he got closer he called out,
"Good morning! What are you doing?"
The young man paused,
looked up and replied,
"Throwing starfish in the ocean."
"I guess I should have asked,
why are you throwing starfish in the ocean?"
"The sun is up and the tide is going out.
And if I don't throw them in they'll die."
"But, young man, don't you realize that
there are miles and miles of beach
and starfish all along it.
You can't possibly make a difference!"
The young man listened politely.
Then bent down, picked up another starfish
and threw it into the sea,
past the breaking waves and said-
"It made a difference for that one."

growth mindset - the power of yet
Carole Dweck, Jo Boaler, Robert Crosnoe, Jen Sincero. All of these people encourage a growth mindset through their work. Carole Dweck is an American Psychologist. She is the Lewis and Virginia Eaton Professor of Psychology at Standford University. She is widely known for her work on growth mindset. When she talks about growth mindset she uses the term 'The Power Of Yet'. Carole Dweck found that we all have different beliefs about what we are capable of doing. She thinks children (And adults) with a growth mindset believe that intelligence and abilities can be developed through effort, persistence, trying different things, and learning from mistakes. She makes videos and performs to live audiences, talking about the growth mindset, and helping people to realize the power of yet.
