Summer learning journey- arriving in New Zealand

Activity 1

It is widely believed that the first people to arrive in New Zealand came from Polynesia. Most historians believe that they landed in New Zealand over 700 years ago. Although they were originally from many different countries, these settlers learned to live together and, eventually, formed their own distinct culture known as ‘Māori.’  Māori have their own language, traditions, and culture.

Follow this link to read a short story about a famous man in Māori mythology – Maui. On your blog, post three facts that you learned about this interesting man. What other stories have you heard about Maui?

Fact 1. His brothers would not let him go fishing.

Fact 2. His brothers were always angry at him.
Fact 3. He court a big fish.
Fact 4. he was the best fisherman ever

  1. Hi Lily,

My name's Ruby and I'm one of the people who will be blogging with you this summer as part of the Summer Learning Journey program. It's great to see that you've made a start on these activities.

Good work with this activity! Those are 4 great facts about Maui. I like how you've talked about the way he caught a big fish. What did that fish turn out to be?

I wonder why his brothers were always angry with him. Do you have any ideas? I think they might have been jealous of Maui's fishing skills.

Have you read any other Maui stories? There is a really good one about Maui and the sun. Here is the link if you're interested in reading it:

Let me know what you think!
    Cheers,

  4. Kia Ora Lily,

My name is Georgia and I am the cluster manager for the Kaikohekohe (Northland) cluster. For the next few days, I'll be commenting on students blogs from Uru Manuka and I am very excited to see the work you all have been doing this summer.

Awesome work on this activity, you shared some great facts about Maui. Have you heard the story of Maui and the fish before this activity? I find it a very interesting story, especially when the fish turns out to be more than just a fish!

It'd be great to see you complete more activities with us before the programme ends on the 26th Jan.

    Nga Mihi
